KEN BLOCK KEEPS RACING DESPITE COCKPIT FIRE
-part 2
MWRT’s Ken Block threw down a commanding performance at the final stop of the 2012 Global RallyCross season in Vegas last week—a race he dominated from the start: qualifying first, winning both of his heats and going on to lead the first five laps of the final. And, Block would have likely won the entire event, had the interior of his Ford Fiesta HFHV not decided to catch on fire! But in true "press on regardless" fashion, Ken Block kept going despite the smoke and flames. Unfortunately once the fire spread to vital electrical components, he was forced to retire. But to celebrate Ken Block's "ain't care" style, the Hoonigans have released this video depicting Block's desire to win overriding any logical sense of self preservation that the rest of humanity might have.
“Yep, my car definitely decided to set itself on fire during the final at SEMA,” said Block. “I noticed the fire, but I was in the lead and really, really wanted to lock in the win. I figured that maybe I could try and keep going and make it to the finish before it got too bad. Hell, the only reason Tanner [Foust] was able to get past me was that I got distracted looking down to make sure my leg wasn’t on fire. But, eventually, when my ECU fell over from the mounting points melting in the fire, I realized I should probably pull over and try to put the fire out. I’m still gutted about it, but at least the in-car footage is awesome!”
